When we walked inside the museum, we met some nice workers and they told us to wait for a person called Anthony. He finally came! When we were coming into the main entrance of the museum it looked really cool because the entrance was dark and there was like this mini cave that leads into a tunnel on a wall which goes around in circles.
Anthony told us a story about a taniwha and after that we looked at old fishing nets, weapons and cloaks that Maori people used. I also found a little picture of an extinct tree. Which was cool. We learnt about Maori technology and how they worked and made things. After that we were having our break time and then we had to follow Anthony again into this room that has things that are made from greenstone/pounamu which is greenstone in Maori. We did rotations for 3 minutes each. There was 6 or 5 rotations.
Rotation Activities:
- Hollowing wood with a greenstone axe.
- Using a old, traditional type of drill.
- Smoothing sandstone.
- Carving wood with greenstone.
- Re-drawing old paintings from the 1600 or 1500's.
- And last was making a fire with a stick and this piece of wood that has a hole in it
These are photos of me and my group doing the activities:
After that we had free time and we got to do anything in the museum with our groups. I took a view at arctic animals, extinct animals, fossils, giant crystals and quartz, looked at dinosaur bones, went through that dark mini cave at the entrance and studied other things that are related to history. And there was also a big tree and we were allowed to climb at lunchtime. Everyone was playing a game called 'the floor is lava'.
Question: What would you rather be doing: Going to the museum or being at school?
